Orange City and Deltona, FL
Feeling nervous or anxious at the thoughts of going to the dentist is completely normal, and more common than you might think. Dental anxiety in Orange City should not keep you from receiving the dental care that you need. Unfortunately, many people who experience dental anxiety will end up avoiding a trip to the dentist at all costs, which means that neglect may lead to repairs that are even more extensive and costly. Instead of heading down the inevitable road of costly dental repairs, or even dental pain, sedation dentistry allows you to get the care that you need but without the anxiety or fears of going to the dentist!
Sedation dentistry in Orange City offers a great solution for patients feeling apprehensive or scared of visiting their dentist. At Terry Soule, DDS, we offer two types of sedation dentistry. Here is a look at our sedation dentistry options.
Also referred to as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a safe and effective way of feeling relaxed and calm while receiving your dental treatments.
How it works
We place a comfortable mask over your nose so that you can breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Within minutes you will feel relaxed, and calm as we begin your dental procedure. The mask remains in place throughout your appointment. Once we shut off the flow of the gas and you breathe regular air, you will begin feeling yourself again, and will even be able to drive yourself back to work, school, or home afterward, which makes it an attractive sedation dentistry option.
With oral sedation, Dr. Soule will prescribe a pill that you will take about 30 minutes prior to your appointment. Oral sedation results in a bit more relaxation, and may even cause you to not remember anything about your appointment. Since the effects can last several hours or longer, we recommend that you have a trusted individual drive you to and from your appointment. It also is recommended that they sit with you for a few hours following your appointment until you feel yourself again. You should plan on taking the remainder of the day off from work or school, as well as your usual activities at home.
Which method of sedation is right for me?
There are certain preexisting conditions that may preclude you from receiving sedation dentistry in any form.
These medical conditions include:
However, most healthy individuals are candidates for sedation dentistry. The type of sedation that is best for you will depend on your health, as well as the level of sedation you prefer while receiving your dental treatments. With nitrous oxide and oral sedation, you will remain alert enough to control your body movements and communicate with your dental care team.
