  1. Keep your gums clean

Brushing your teeth is a good oral hygiene habit, but it isn’t a complete routine unless you add in flossing your teeth as well. Lots of food particles and bacteria lurk between your teeth and along the gum line. And, the only sure-fire way to clean these areas is by flossing. Don’t believe us? Well, grab some floss and go for it. After you’ve flossed between a few teeth, what does that floss smell like? Probably like something terrible! That stinky stuff is the culprit behind bad breath. So, keep your gums clean by flossing once a day to get rid of bad breath.

  1. Practice good oral hygiene

Good oral hygiene involves brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and another important factor that a lot of people tend to leave out – that’s going to the dentist twice a year. No, it isn’t a gimmick, and yes, those dental cleanings really are worth it. Practicing good oral hygiene means you are removing plaque buildup from your teeth and gums, which otherwise would start to stink pretty bad. And, those twice-yearly dental visits help by having stuck on plaque that has hardened (tartar), removed. Ignoring this tartar buildup not only leads to unbearable breath and cavities but also can cause gum disease.

  1. Rinse out your mouth regularly

It’s a good habit to get into – rinsing out your mouth after you eat or drink coffee. Or, accomplish the same thing by drinking lots of water throughout the day. Now, a refreshing glass of water may not get rid of pungent bad breath caused by eating food laced with tons of onions and garlic, but it can help for mild bad breath caused from drinking coffee, and to kick that notorious morning breath.

  1. Keep your tongue clean

If you want to really kick bad breath to the curb, commit to cleaning your tongue, too. You can use your toothbrush to scrub your tongue’s surface each time that you brush. If you really want to make a statement, you can purchase a tongue scraper or brush specifically designed to clean the tongue. Any of these options will get the job done. Find which one works best for you. You should clean your tongue each time that you brush your teeth for best results.

  1. Kick the habit

By habit, we mean smoking or using tobacco. Smoking, and even chewing tobacco can cause terribly odorous breath that most people unless you’re a smoker also, find to be foul-smelling. It can be difficult to get rid of smoker’s breath even if you brush or chew gum. Honestly, the best way to get rid of it is to kick the habit entirely!

  1. Steer clear of odorous foods

As if the indigestion weren’t enough, odorous foods like onions and garlic are known to cause bad breath that lingers into tomorrow. If you just can’t resist eating food that you know will cause bad breath, plan on limiting it to specific occasions. Like not on a day when you have an important work meeting, and definitely not when you’re out on a first date. Save it for Friday night when you order take-out to power through your Netflix binge.

  1. Chomp on sugar-free gum

Most people are unaware when they have bad breath until the other person standing in the elevator takes a big step to the side, or they get turned down for a goodnight kiss. So, to make sure that you aren’t caught in one of these embarrassing moments, keep some mint-flavored sugar-free gum handy. Not only will it help freshen your breath, but it does double duty if the gum contains Xylitol – an ingredient found in sugar-free gum that helps reduce your risk of cavities.

  1. Talk to your doctor

Last, if it still seems like no matter what you do that you can’t shake that bad breath, then it’s time to talk to your doctor. Bad breath can be normal, especially if you’ve eaten something pungent, haven’t brushed your teeth all day, or have a cold or sinus infection. But, get a checkup by the dentist if your bad breath lingers and doesn’t seem to resolve. It could be a sign of gum disease or even serious diseases such as diabetes. It’s best to get it checked out if these above tips don’t seem to help.
